Humble Beginnings
The foundation of Hindu worship in Dubai began in 1958. A small temple was established in the Bur Dubai area (in the old Souq Al Kabeer area), primarily serving the early Indian trading community. It housed shrines for Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna and became a vital spiritual hub for Hindu expatriates.
Growth of the Community
As Dubai developed and more Indian families migrated for business and employment, the Hindu community expanded. The temple in Bur Dubai became overcrowded, especially during major festivals like Diwali and Navratri. Despite the modest infrastructure, the temple maintained daily rituals, pujas, and hosted community events.
Need for Expansion
With a growing population and increasing diversity among devotees, the need for a larger, more accessible, and modern temple became evident. The Hindu community, in collaboration with the Government of Dubai, began planning for a new temple space to meet spiritual and cultural needs.
Approval for New Temple
The UAE government approved the construction of a new Hindu temple in Jebel Ali, an area known for its “Corridor of Tolerance,” where churches, gurdwaras, and mosques coexist. This was seen as a monumental gesture of interfaith harmony and cultural acceptance by the UAE leadership.
Construction Begins
Groundbreaking and construction began for the new temple during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite global challenges, the project moved forward with support from Dubai authorities and local Hindu leaders.
Grand Opening
On October 5, 2022, the new Hindu Temple Dubai officially opened to the public. The temple spans over 70,000 square feet, featuring intricate Indian and Arabic architectural designs. It houses 16 deities across different Hindu traditions, including deities like Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Lord Ayyappan, and Goddess Durga. The inauguration was attended by dignitaries and marked a historic moment in the UAE’s interfaith journey.
Present – A Center for Unity and Worship
Since its opening, the temple has become a major cultural and spiritual center for the Hindu community in the UAE and visitors from around the world. The temple regularly hosts religious festivals, yagnas, aarti, interfaith dialogues, and community service initiatives. It continues to promote peace, devotion, and the values of tolerance as envisioned by the UAE leadership.
